In the midst of it.

A year ago today; Auckland went into its second lockdown. 

Today, in Exeter I’m heading home to sleep and do night shifts tonight; as one of our staff members’ spouses has got Covid post double vaccination.


The reality is that Covid post double vaccine is much less troublesome. 


But Covid amoung the unvaccinated is as bad as ever. 


Pregnant women, for a wide range of reasons, including recent hesitancy from medical staff to recommend vaccination, are much less likely to have been vaccinated. There have only been a handful of mums sick with Covid; but they have been sick. We are poised.


Devon fared well in the first and second waves; thankfully. But this; the third wave; feels like our turn.


It’s going okay, but there is a balance: at the moment we are trying to continue normal clinics and surgeries while still appropriately isolating staff to protect our patients.

Hands. Face. Space.

Tl;dr version: uk govt has rushed through law without the system to enact it yet, nhs is awesome, British people themselves even more awesome. I am obliged by law to remain in my accomodation for 10 days, not leaving for anything. I will do this whether I am monitored or not, I get where the idea comes from even if it seems dumb when coming from a low prevalence place to a high prevalence place. Anyway, this so far has been my experience. A very David farrier experience. gov.uk clearly outlined expectations, and also got me to fill in a form with my contact details, accomodations details and travel details included the chair I sat in on the plane.  Awesome.  Arrived in Heathrow- crammed into 1/3 of the space available with people from all sorts of other planes. Sigh. Did not get asked for proof of negative covid test from NZ on my arrival in UK. Fair enough I guess, it was checked when I left NZ. Start isolation. Arrived at accomodation; two home covid testing kits in a parcel...

Attempts at Surfing in Newquay

 Once again I was hosted by my housemates parents, incredibly kind people who used to run their house as a B&B and went all out to spoil us - with food and accommodation and kindness and insistence that we stay out of the kitchen and not worry about the sand that somehow would still flitter everywhere despite dusting everything off before we left the beach or entered the house. I felt like a teenager and ate like it too... We were booked into a two day surfing lesson with  Women + Waves , a company I can definitely recommend. I appreciated that on the second day when I was pretty much tapped out (I couldn't lift my body off the board anymore without pain), the coach was still encouraging but also didn't put pressure on. She had a good sense of humour and was really skilled, some of the folk were up out the back on green waves by the second day. It was just really nice to be in the water, seeing the sun strike through the waves, casting shadows and light on the sand below. ...
